This village is situated right between Berchtesgaden and
Salzburg. We find here the village of Ettenberg and the Almbachklamm. An interesting point is the marbel grinding mill at the
end of the "Almbachklamm." The tourists keep the mill alive by buying souvenirs there. According to several documents the mill's products, marble
balls, were transportet to Francfort and Nuremberg already in the
16th century to finally be shipped on sailing boats
from Hamburg, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and London to East- and West India.
The "Untersberg" towers up miles-long North of the valley
of Schellenberg with steep precipices and jagged rock faces. Besides the
Watzmann the Untersberg is one of the most popular and most frequented mountains
in Berchtesgaden. It can easily be climbed and offers a marvellous view when
visibility is good. A tour on the cable car from the Austrian village St.
Leonhard and the following crossing the jagged plateau to the "Berchtesgadener
Hochthron," the highest elevation of this massive mountain 6469 feet, is
especially popular. Also worth a visit is the ice-cave on the Untersberg
which in 1925 was disclosed by stairs and banisters.
The astonished eye of the visitors discover here shafts, halls
and domes made of the icy-shining underground of the "Untersberg". More
