The Schellenberger ice cave resides on an altitude of 1570 m on the Untersberg. You arrive at the cave after about 3 to 4 hours of ascent from Marktschellenberg or you take the ropeway of St. Leonhard from the Salzburger country to the Untersberg and descend 1.5 hours (walking time) as far as the doorway of the cave. Don't forget to take warm clothes with you, because the temperature inside the cave is hardly ever at zero. The guided tour (totalling 500m) leads across catwalks and stairs via shafts, galleries and icefalls to the deepest point, the Fuggerhall, 55m below the doorway. Because the cave slopes inside, the cold winter air remains the whole summer in the cave. For milleniums snowmelt and rainwater have been frozen by the coldness inside the cave, in parts the frost crust is up to 30 m thickness. Names like ice organ, ice cathedral and cave fairy forshadow, what a glamourous impression the ice cave gives to its visitors.
